RSC18 week 19

HAPPY DAYS

Isn't it wonderful to see spring flowers in bloom again!   It makes me feel happy in my heart.  My daughter and I took a long drive around all the neighborhood last Sunday. The sun was shining, a breeze was blowing and we saw so many beautiful gardens in bloom.  It was the peak of tulip season and magnolias were blooming as well.  

I am also enjoying PINK this month, thanks to Angela.  My sweet daughter loves to go thrift store shopping and brought me a lovely pink quilt top.  She knows just what makes me happy, fabric of course.  

I ended up trimming it down to 40 X 40 inches.  Some pink calico from way back in my stash was just right for a backing.  It does not require batting because it will go to a nurse near the Texas border, who gives them to mothers in Mexico who need lightweight baby blankets.

Another project I've started is using up a layer cake assortment.  Don't know when or where I acquired it, but I'm taking one more step to get rid of my stash.  

These animals of all kinds will delight some child in need.  I will be making two more lightweight blankets from this collection. I love layer cakes because they piece together so quickly.

RSC16 week 20

SPRING GREEN

Happy, happy springtime!  A friend picked me a little bouquet of lilies of the valley, my favorite flower with such a delicate fragrance.  I can enjoy it every time I pass by.  And out on my deck a little house finch is perched on the railing, singing his heart out.  Bird songs are very special to me also.

Here is my May RSC16 16-patch block with a happy dancing bear just out of hibernation.

I chose green also for my Modern HST Sampler block Diagonal.  I have some beautiful green prints from Barbara Brackman's William Morris Jewels collection.  Since this one is a floral I also chose a lime green tone-on-tone floral to give a springtime effect.

My next WIP is the pinwheel row quilt I started last year.  To use more of the fun fabrics I had gathered I made this braid strip.  It was too short so this week I added a couple more strips and trimmed it all up.

The highlight of the week was Monday.  Our Monona Quilters group of about 50 members here in WI  held our semiannual charity quilt collection.  A total of 172 quilts of all sizes were collected for local charities such as Project Linus, a local veterans group, homeless transition housing and others.  Here are the quilts before we posed with them for photos.

I'm very proud to be a member of this active and generous group which meets weekly for show and tell.  They give a lot of encouragement and support to all the members.   We also have a giveaway table after the meeting where we can find many goodies and many of these reject fabrics are turned into lovely charity quilts.

MODERN HST SAMPLER

I chose green for my Diagonal block this May, because it is the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color.  I had some beautiful green prints from Barbara Brackman's William Morris Jewels collection.  Since it is a floral I also chose a lime green tone on tone floral to give a springtime effect.

Throwback Thursday, August 20

A TRIBUTE

Here is a quilt for my son, Chris, which I began when he was in college.  He wanted a black quilt, but I said, "No way."  I decided on dark blue with a simple Amish style pattern.  I got it almost quilted when he got engaged and married.  She had a different color scheme planned, so I put it away all these years.  He lived through cancer and a divorce, then side effects in recent years.  I hoped to finish it for him, but he passed away in April.  

    Last week I read about Cynthia Brunz's idea for volunteers to finish a quilt for another.  I took the quilt to my local Monona Quilters on Monday and one of the members very kindly offered to finish the quilt so it could be donated to a local charity called Road Home.  This group provides housing for homeless families.  I am so very grateful that it will go to a family who really needs it.  Chris was a very generous person and would have appreciated that.

 

This quilt will be my small tribute to Chris, who was taken too soon.  I am grateful to have this new community of caring quilting friends, both near and far, who have helped me to focus on a way to give of myself and my talents now and in the future.
