RSC week 40

WHAT COLOR IS BROWN?

Brown has finally turned up for our Rainbow Scrap Challenge, a month I have been dreading.  I have been wondering how to combine it with my bright primary balloon blocks, while brown is a mix of other colors. So I dug deep into my batik stash to try to find some brown pieces that would work well with them.  I'm still not sure what to do.

Here are three different groups of fabrics to consider.

1.  These are more or less dull brown tones, but there is a pretty good range from dark to light.

2.  This group is brighter and busier overall.

3.  This final group is softer, not as bright, but stronger in saturation.

So I will be thinking about this for awhile.  Any thoughts?

Meanwhile, I am working with a fun group of veggie and fruit fabrics, all WOF, and golden yellow strips to separate them.  This photo was before I trimmed the width to 7-1/2 inches, essentially a row design.  I love these prints that came from the group giveaway table.

Finally, one more photo as a clue to my posts on Throwback Thursday.  I hope that you

Will have a chance to check out my blog itself for Throwback Thursday on Sept. 24 and Oct.1 to see what these little men are up to.  It is a three part suspense story, so take a look.

I link up with RSC15 at superscrappy.blogspot.com, Sew Cute Tuesday at blossomheartquilts.com and Throwback Thursday at kristaquilts.blogspot.com.   Hope you will join me.

  1. I like group 1 and group 3 better than group 2 -- just depends on the rest of what the block will be near . . .

  2. I thought group 2 at first, but group 3 reads as a nice wooden frame. I think it will look great as part of a full range of colors.

  3. I like group 3 as well, but why not try some lighter browns and tans? They would provide a good contrast to your strong colors. Good luck!

  4. I really like that 3rd group--the highly saturated ones--to me they seem to mix better with those bright balloons...hugs, Julierose

  5. I like the browns in group 3 the best. Lovely rich colours to set off the balloons. Group 1 is too bland, group 2 too orange. I like Mari's suggestion of mixing up the groupings.

  6. I believe that the BROWN fabrics in groups 1 and 3 would work fine with your balloons. Group 2??? Not so much! Group 3 would probably be my choice.

  7. I like all your brown prints, Paula.
Wow. Lots of food prints. Would make some nice aprons and hot pads/ pot holders.

  8. ooof this is a hard one. I like the bright ones in the middle pic. If you can't mix tone, at least baffle them with variation... heh heh

  9. Paula, my preference is the fabrics in the first photo, but not the two lighter ones. Drop the bubbles and the squizzles from group 3 into group 1, and that would be perfect!

  10. certainly there are plenty of browns to choose from but not sure which works best

  11. Hmmm, lots of brown choices there - you might have to make a block in every combo just for fun!

  12. Just plunge in with a mixture. You may not enjoy the single brown blocks, but you may be surprised how well they fit into the overall quilt.

  13. I'd go with group 3, those dark rich browns act a lot like black and can really make the colors sing.

  14. Group 3, I think, but I'd also try a pick-at-random arrangement pulled from the whole collection. But I'm a fan of random (i.e.: don't make me decide) so take it for what it's worth... 8)

  17. My personal choice would go for the Group 2, as I don't like violent contrasts.
