RSC18 week 12

SPRING GREEN?

I'm still waiting for any sign of spring here in Wisconsin.  Please send me some if you have it, to tide me over until April.  Having spent many years in California and Washington State, it's such a long winter here.  

However, I have been keeping busy with my green fabrics, so cheerful.  The first one is a baby top I just finished piecing.  It makes me feel happy just looking at it. Right now I'm just calling it The Zoo.  

  

I'm leaving it about 35 inches square after a border or two is added. 

My other project is an adult-sized quilt to donate to Covered In Love.  What better way to use my stash than to bring some comfort to grieving families.  Kat gets them to the chaplain at the hospital in Texas where she works.  She says that you never know what scrap of fabric in a quilt might touch the heart of the recipient, perhaps a cat or a special flower, so anything is welcome.  

Here is a sample of the charm squares with grey spacers which have a soft homey feel.

I've got almost all of the 100-plus blocks completed,  This one has almost every color except purple, so I can carry it over until the Rainbow Scrap Challenge April color.  

I was sorry to hear that Mari and others on the East Coast had to dig out from that huge snowstorm.  The good thing is that snow does not seem to harm the fresh growth of greenery and flowers.  I hope all of you have a burst of springtime energy this week.

RSC18 week 4

STARS AND STRIPS

I love the Sawtooth Star block because of the variations, especially using a central focus fabric.  The first one I made last year was a  random color choice, not a Rainbow Scrap Challenge selection.

When I was deciding what blocks to use for RSC18, I chose this block.  For my January light blue blocks I made the first one by adding pink to complement the Kaffe Fassett fabric, one of my favorites. Matching the blue would have been impossible, at last with my limited stash.

My second block used this lovely fussy-cut medallion.  I apparently was not quite fussy enough, but was determined to use it.  

This week it occurred to me that I have never made any strip pieced blocks. Then I saw Kat's call for these blocks for Covered In Love, http://katandcatquilts.blogspot.com/.

I do have miles of strips taking up space and found some ugly fabric to use for the foundation, another way to shrink my  stash.  (This is my year of no fabric purchases.)  

Here are the three strip blocks I made in no time at all, and I cut up several other 10-1/2 inch backing pieces.  

I don't know why it never occurred to me to make these blocks years ago, but better late than never. My stash is already thanking me. 

My Scrap Attack choice for this month is my Geese Migration quilt and I started Quilting it today.  So I will have that finish to show you next week.

RSC17 week 46

MORE BROWNS

This week sets some kind of record for me, start to finish of a flimsie.  I told you last week about my large bin stuffed with batiks and waiting to be used.  There were so many strips that it was overstuffed.

Now you see how much I have emptied the bin.  

There were so many strips that I had no use for, or so I thought.  After tackling these unwanted strips I turned them into this 50 X 60 top, finished except for borders.

I added one little spark of orange to each strip, which makes quite a difference.  If you know me, you know I can't make dull quilts. I had to add those bright touchs.  Many of you liked them very much.

I decided on an inner orange batiks border and a wider subtle one.  Here is how it looks with the orange border added.  

I've been saving a precious two yards of 108" wide batik which I bought in 2008 from Sew Batik at Quilt Expo here in Madison WI.  I'm showing you this before I even remove the string tie and cut off a few 4-inch strips.  There is still time for a few more pets.

Tomorrow I will attach those final strips and it will be off to Kat at Covered In Love, her wonderful charity for grieving families.

I have also found time to add a pair of evergreen trees to my neighborhood.  The one on the right is a Christmas tree with stars and ball ornaments from a charm square.  I used my Tri-Recs rulers to make them.  

Time is really flying this month, as it always does with holidays coming.  I wish all my USA friends a very blessed Thanksgiving Day, and to you other dear friends abroad a special time of relaxation.

The first one is a Mile a Minute quilt, with a fleece backing.

The other one is a row quilt for a girl, in pink and purple, also with a,fleece backing.

A FINE FINISH

I just finished sewing the borders on the quilt, which I had been calling Tossed Salad.  In about one week I turned a bunch of old strips and about 100 neutral 4-patch blocks into a quilt that I'm happy to donate to Covered In Love.  

My granddaughter stopped by just now and kindly held the quilt for a quick photo.  It will finish about 50x60 inches.  All the fabrics were from my stash.  The sashing fabric was bought for a dress many years ago, but has been used in several quilts. 

I'm going to show it at our quilt group next Monday and then send it along to you, Kat.  I'm really delighted that all these unloved fabrics will give some comfort to people in need.

RSC17 week 24

 STILL YELLOW

This week I worked on my final yellow blocks, two yellow Geese Migration blocks.  They were difficult to find varieties of yellow to fill the blocks.  The light and dark are not very different.

I really enjoy making these blocks each month.  They will make a great rainbow.  

The latest project that popped into my head was to use some scrappy pieces hanging around for too long.  I had a container stuffed full of 2-inch repro strips and about 100 4-patch blocks in neutrals.

These reminded me of wilted salad and soggy crackers.

I decided to make 7-1/2 inch blocks using both pieces.  I also had a large piece of navy with little flowers, plenty for sashing and borders.  I got so excited about this project that I finished the 30 blocks in three days.  Sarah came to lay them out on my apt hallway design floor.  Not a bad use for the, tossed salad and crackers.

There are some yellows in there and I'm pleased that the collection looks softly colorful.  This first,sample shows the added sashing.

This 50x60 top will go to Covered In Love at Kat and Cats for donation to dying patients and their family at the large hospital in Texas where she is a  nurse.  She has local volunteers who will quilt it.
